“We look forward to working with Motorola in replacing our aging and outdated radio system,” Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons said in a prepared statement. “The implementation of this advanced, statewide interoperable communication system is a top priority in securing our state. It will ensure better communications among public safety agencies in Tennessee and with agencies in surrounding states.”<br />
Under the terms of the contract, <span class="keyword_link"><a href="http://urgentcomm.com/companies/motorola-solutions?intlink=autlink" title="More on Motorola Solutions">Motorola Solutions</a></span> will build a P25 hybrid system, with 700/800 MHz spectrum being used in metropolitan areas and VHF frequencies being used in more rural areas, said Jay Malpass, strategic projects manager for Motorola Solutions. With this in mind, the state plans to purchase <a href="http://www.motorola.com/Business/US-EN/Product+Lines/APX" target="_blank">multiband APX portable and mobile radios</a> for its personnel and vehicle fleet, he said.<br />
The P25 deployment will replace the current low-band and VHF networks that are more than 30 years old, provide spotty coverage and are not able to hand-off calls between towers, Malpass said.<br />
“There are so many places that the system doesn’t work — even mobile coverage,” Malpass said during an interview. “It creates a lot of stress on the trooper to be able to understand switching radio channels based on where he’s at [because of the lack of handoffs between towers]. It doesn’t sound that complicated, but when you see somebody try to do that when they’re in a high-speed chase, it’s virtually impossible.<br />
“From the troopers’ perspective, they need continuity of operable communications.”<br />
Phase I of the project will address upgrades in the Chattanooga, Fall Branch and Knoxville districts and is expected to be completed next year, Malpass said. State officials hope to solicit funding next year for the buildout of P25 technology in the other five districts in the state, he said.<br />

is currently executing two task order projects within our VA VISN 11 MATOC with
our teaming partner Shiel Sexton. One of the projects entitled “Upgrade Cooling
Tower Efficiency” consists of removing and replacing a cooling tower at the
Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, IN. The project value is $2.4M and
is slated to complete mid-March 2013. This facility has a total of two
towers with a total of 5 cells. This project entails removing one of the towers
having two cells and replacing with a new efficient tower. The three cell tower
is to remain and was left in operation until late Dec. 2012 when temperatures
consistently remained below 50 degrees. Along with demolition of the two cell
tower and associated concrete basin, an existing screen wall with foundations
was demolished and will be replaced at the end of the project. Once demolition
of the tower and basin was complete, excavation began to allow for the new
concrete basin and lid. The concrete basin and lid have been poured with
structural steel installation to support the tower mounted on the lid occurring
during the end of Jan. 2013. The extreme cold temperatures in Indianapolis
during concrete pours added an extra challenge to ensure consistent cure times
and temperatures and the avoidance of thermal shock. The cooling tower delivery
and erection is scheduled to begin Jan. 28 and will have a 2 week duration.
During erection of the new cooling tower, the existing tower will be connected
to the new CW piping and pumps. It is scheduled to be back in operation early
Feb. 2013. Once the erection of the new tower is complete it will be connected
to the CW piping/pumps and will be well on the way to commissioning and
turnover to the VA. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Aiken, SC - <strong>HICAPS</strong> was chosen by Brasfield and Gorrie as the “General
Trades” contractor for Area 100 of the new 1.5 million square foot Bridgestone ORR
plant in Aiken, SC. HICAPS’ work will consist of rough carpentry,
casework, metal stud framing/drywall, painting, flooring, hollow metal,
overhead doors, and equipment lifts for approximately 350,000 square feet of
the new tire manufacturing facility. The work package is currently valued
at $3,005,000 and is scheduled to be completed by July of 2013. Mark Koenig with HICAPS is the Senior Project Manager for this project.</span><br />

Charlotte, NC- November 15, 2012 - HICAPS has received the 2012 Merit Award for Construction Excellence from ABCC (Associated Builders and Contractors of the Carolinas). Accepting the award for HICAPS was Dan Hood, President and CEO of HICAPS, and his wife Gisela Hood. The Project Manager was Chip Calhoun.<br />
The award was given for the VA Long Term Care Facility in Salisbury, NC. This project consisted of an extensive renovation of 45,000 square feet in the existing and fully operational Long Term Care (Building 42,) in three phases, on three different floors, plus the construction of an attached New Hospice Building (approximately 19,000 square feet) which had elaborate interior millwork and trim finishes, and the exterior had extensive site work and landscaping. Even though this was not a Design/Build project, HICAPS worked with RPA Design, the Architect of Record, throughout the duration. The total project duration was 400 days.<br />

David Yates joined the HICAPS team in October of 2011 as a project manager for the construction team, as well as a helping hand in business development. David is a graduate of Campbell University with a degree of Bachelor of Business Administration. For over 12 years, David worked for a fire sprinkler subcontractor where he held positions such as Designer, Project Manager, and District Manager and during his last 5 years was Vice President of Contract Operations. David plans to continue his growth in the construction industry at HICAPS by being exposed to all aspects of construction, while utilizing the skills he obtained working as a specialized contractor. Through his professional experiences in project management, marketing/business development and operations management, David is making a great addition to our team. <br />

David is originally from Wilmington, NC. He and his wife Jenny have two young sons, Owen and Pearson. HICAPS provided general construction services for the removal of all surface equipment, plugging and capping of one abandoned 997 foot production water well and four contaminant monitoring wells. Closure of the water well required the removal and reinstallation of an existing removable roof and wall to access the well water equipment and turbine pump. The well decommissioning was done in accordance with all applicable state and federal requirements. Our teaming partner, Richardson and Richardson assisted us greatly on this project by providing quality control and directing the well house up-fit. <br />HICAPS provided overall project management as well as on-site field supervision, quality control and enforced OSHA safety standards. HICAPS also coordinated all material delivery, ensured all personnel were prepared, scheduled and provided communication with the VA Contracting Officer Representative and other VA facility staff ensuring they were continuously aware of our plans and progress. <br />All New Mexico state water well compliance regulations and the ones from the VA campus that superseded them were met and provided unique aspects to this project. We faced the challenge of abandoning wells in high traffic / patient parking areas, which is uncommon and required extensive coordination efforts to ensure minimal impact to the Air Force dental patients and staff. Furthermore, two of the observation wells were beneath solar roof canopies. It was contingent upon HICAPS and our subcontractors to present a method of abandonment to the VA and US Air Force (USAF, the end-user) that would mitigate any impact to the photovoltaic panels and their supporting canopy structure. HICAPS performed extensive planning and logistics coordination to minimize the traffic impact of observation well abandonment in the USAF parking lot, and performed two of the abandonments during weekends. HICAPS developed expertise in VA hot work requirements as a result of the decommissioning of the production well and observation wells. On several occasions HICAPS and Richardson and Richardson provided a finished well house and cleaned site with additional gravel that exceeded the contract requirements. We were able to complete the project within 4 months after receiving notice to proceed, which was 2 months less than the project required. This allowed us to save time and money in addition to further mitigating the inconvenience of occupying VA property near critical campus water infrastructure. Ronnie has over twenty seven years engineering experience as a project manager, project engineer, and maintenance engineer for both the private and public sectors. Ronnie graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in North Carolina, and also a Certified Energy Manager and a Certified Plant Engineer.
